Dream big, work very hard but set your expectations low: let life pleasantly surprise you

I know this may be somewhat controversial, but it had been my life’s motto since I was very young. Many disagree with me. What do you think?

I got called a pessimist, but I strongly believe this is simply risk management: when you consider and prepare for all possible outcomes, you will be a lot calmer and happier with the final results, whatever they may be. And honestly, who does not like to be pleasantly surprised?

This works very well also when dealing with a “spirited” child or with someone battling anxiety. It may seem counter-intuitive, but thinking also about negative possibilities actually has a calming effect.

After all, even the great late poet Maya Angelou wrote it in one of his books:

“Hoping for the best, prepared for the worst, and unsurprised by anything in between.”
