The oak fought the wind and was broken, the willow bent when it must and survived ― Robert Jordan, The Fires of Heaven
I love this aphorism: I always considered myself weak and powerless, until I got confronted with very difficult circumstances and I realized that being flexible and resilient is more important than “looking solid and strong”.
I mentioned before that resilience and adaptability are the real secret of happiness; however appearing strong and BEING strong when you need to be are two very different things. How many times people act as a bullies just to hide their own weakness?
Today, resolve to be the willow: bend only if you must, but don’t stand your ground just as a principle, even if you realize you are on the wrong side. Be free to change your mind and change yourself. This is what wise, adult people do.
Of course, this a very debatable point. In fact Aesop believed the exact opposite: what do you think?
